Manganese is a chemical element, know as Mn on the periodic table, and has the atomic number 25. Manganese is the 12th most abundant element and the 4th most used metal for manufacturing worldwide. Manganese has many uses. It is used primarily in manufacturing, especially in the steel industry.
Almost 90% of the manganese mined worldwide is used for steel manufacturing. Most of the steel produced contains about 0.5% manganese, while high strength steels contain only a little over 1% manganese alloy. Although the amount of manganese content seems small, manganese is a critical part of strengthening the steel. No other metals possess the properties necessary for providing strength to the steel.
Other applications of manganese exist in the agriculture industry (used in animal feed and fertilizers), in the manufacturing of dry cell batteries, fertilizers, feed for livestock, water filtration and pigment applications.
