Manganese Ore & Uses

Manganese (Mn) is a chemical element with the atomic number 25 on the periodic table. It is the 12th most abundant element in the Earth's crust and the fourth most widely used metal in manufacturing, after iron, aluminum, and copper.


Manganese is a strategic industrial metal with a broad range of applications across the steel, agriculture, chemical, energy storage, and water treatment industries. Its most significant use is in steel production, where it serves as an essential alloying element that improves strength, hardness, wear resistance, and toughness while helping remove oxygen and sulfur during the steelmaking process.


Approximately 90% of the world's manganese production is consumed by the steel industry. Although conventional carbon steel typically contains only about 0.5% manganese, and high-strength alloy steels generally contain between 1% and 2% manganese, this relatively small addition is critical to achieving the mechanical properties required for modern construction, infrastructure, transportation, and manufacturing. There is currently no practical substitute that provides the same combination of metallurgical benefits at a comparable cost.


In addition to steelmaking, manganese plays an increasingly important role in a variety of industries. Manganese compounds are used in fertilizers and animal feed as essential micronutrients, in water treatment and filtration systems, in pigments and specialty chemicals, and in the manufacture of dry-cell and alkaline batteries. More recently, high-purity manganese materials have become critical components in lithium-ion batteries used for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Manganese Sulfate (MnSO₄) is an essential inorganic chemical used in a wide range of agricultural, industrial, and advanced manufacturing applications. It is a critical micronutrient in fertilizer formulations, improving crop growth, chlorophyll production, enzyme activation, and overall agricultural productivity. Manganese sulfate is also an indispensable ingredient in animal nutrition, where it is incorporated into feed supplements to promote healthy bone development, reproductive performance, metabolic function, and immune system health in livestock and poultry.


Beyond its traditional agricultural applications, manganese sulfate has become an increasingly strategic material due to the rapid expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage industries. High-purity manganese sulfate monohydrate (HPMSM) is a key precursor used in the production of lithium-ion battery cathodes, particularly nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and lithium manganese oxide (LMO) battery chemistries. As global demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage continues to accelerate, the market for high-purity manganese products is expected to experience substantial long-term growth.
